I'm waiting for the day the dotter returns home from school in confusion at having kids--maybe even her friends--chant "Ching-chong Chinaman" at her. Or pull their eyelids up. Or have someone tell her to "go home" and laugh snidely when she says, "I can't go home until Mommy or Daddy picks me up."

Kate said…SBird--Yeah, it covered a whole bunch of things. I loved his imitation Cantonese and Mandarin--and thought even I could do a better job than "ching-chong"!

Love this. I've seen a few commentaries about the "Ching-Chong" episode, and this is the best. What I love is that he concentrates not only (or even predominantly) on the initial racism, but rather on her later defensiveness and her total inability to admit her mistake when challenged by the larger community.
